Catalina is one of the students aboard The Christa. Catalina appeared in Season 1 before being replaced by Suzee in Season 2

Biography[]

Catalina was born on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. She is the go-to girl for engineering problems on The Christa throughout the first season. While she possesses formidable skill and knowledge, her required attendance to a Starcademy remedial class may be due to self-esteem issues and apparent hallucinations; in early episodes, she is often heard discussing all of her problems with an invisible friend she calls "Suzee". This is much to the bemusement and derision of the rest of the crew, who at this point still believe Suzee to be a figment of Catalina's imagination. In "Desperately Seeking Suzee", though, she eventually learns that she can rely on her own judgment and knowledge to solve her problems.

Catalina also possesses a highly competitive streak which generally comes out in response to Harlan's boasting and grandstanding. The two have an ongoing rivalry over almost every subject and Catalina is constantly trying to out-do her older classmate. They are nonetheless friends, and Harlan in particular seems to have a hidden crush on her; Catalina also seems at times to be attracted to Harlan. She also shares Harlan's tendency to leap head-first into situations without necessarily thinking through things beforehand.

Catalina gets along well with the other students on the crew, though her main confidant is Suzee.

Catalina and Suzee ultimately end up switching places in "On The Road To Find Out" at the end of the first season. She resides in Suzee's home on Yensid throughout Season 2.

Skills and Abilities[]

Catalina is able to, like many Saturnians, generate sonic screams, although she is working on making them more powerful. She is typical among Saturnians in that she doesn't dream, having even less than the norm.

Engineering is a strong suit of hers, although she sometimes doubts this. She will even get asked by Commander Goddard for advice in engineering; he claims that she has "a good instinct" for it.

Judging by the skepticism of the crew, it can be inferred that the phenomena of her and Suzee's connection is a rarity.

Trivia[]

  • She often uses the pseudo-swear "Grozit!" as an expletive.
  • Jewel Staite would later go on to play genius mechanic Kaylee Frye in the cult series Firefly as well as Dr. Jennifer Keller in Stargate: Atlantis.
  • Many fans of the show wanted Catalina to come back.
